Introduction

Ford 7740 Row-Crop Tractor

The Ford 7740 is a row-crop tractor produced by Ford in Basildon, England, between 1991 and 1995. It represents a key model in the 40 series, designed to serve as a versatile utility tractor for medium-to-large agricultural operations.

Engine Specifications

The tractor is powered by a 5.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 8-valve liquid-cooled engine. It produces a net power of 95 hp (70.8 kW) and a gross power of 100.3 hp (74.8 kW). The engine utilizes a Lucas CAV DP200 fuel pump and features a 17.5:1 compression ratio, designed for high torque at 1200 RPM.

Transmission and Drivetrain

The 7740 offers multiple transmission configurations to suit different operational needs, including the 8-speed EconoShift, the 16-speed Dual Power, the 12-speed SynchroShift, and the advanced 16-speed ElectroShift/Pulse Command. Drivetrain options include a standard 4x2 2WD configuration or an optional 4x4 MFWD system, both featuring inboard planetary final drives.

Hydraulics and PTO

The hydraulic system is available in open-center (S/SL models) or closed-center load-sensing (SLE model) configurations, providing pump flows up to 20 gpm (75.7 lpm) on the SLE. The rear PTO is independent and offers dual speeds of 540/1000 RPM, ensuring compatibility with a wide array of implements.

Hitch and Dimensions

Equipped with a Category II rear hitch, the tractor features position control with top-link draft sensing. Standard lift capacity is 6,210 lbs (2816 kg) at 24 inches, with optional upgrades available. The machine has a wheelbase of 93 inches and is available with either a two-post foldable ROPS or the Comfort Command Cab.

Conclusion

The Ford 7740 is a robust agricultural workhorse favored for its flexible transmission options and reliable engine performance. It is well-suited for varied row-crop applications, providing the necessary power and hydraulic capacity required for modern farming tasks of the early 1990s.

Transmission Information of Ford, 7740

Transmission variants 1

  • Four gears (1-4), plus reverse, in two ranges (L/H). Optional creeper provided a third range. Tractor must be stopped and clutch used to shift gears or range. The eight-speed transmission was only used on the 7740S.

Transmission variants 2

  • Dual Power adds a two-speed power shift between direct drive and the lower Dual Power range to the basic eight-speed transmission. The Dual Power range is engaged by a switch on the dashboard. Dual Power was an option on the 7740S.

Transmission variants 3

  • Four gears (1-4) in three ranges (L/M/H) with right-hand shuttle lever. Gear shifts are synchronized. Shifts between medium and high ranges are synchronized, but the tractor should be stopped to shift to or from low range. Sychronized shuttle shifting. The 12-speed SynchroShift was standard on the 7740 SL. Dual power was an option with the SynchroShift, turning it into a 24-speed transmission.

Transmission variants 4

  • Four power shift gears arranged in two synchronized ratio groups (1-4 and 5-8). Two synchronized ranges (low/high) and right-hand shuttle. Clutch must be used to shift range or move between the lower (1-4) and higher (5-8) gear ratio groups. Push-button power shifting between the four gears in a ratio group. Push-button de-clutching on the shuttle lever allow shifting without the foot clutch. The 16 power shift was standard on the 7740 SLE.
