Introduction
Ford 7840 Row-Crop Tractor
The Ford 7840 is a row-crop tractor produced by Ford in Basildon, England, between 1991 and 1995. As part of the 40 series, it was designed to serve as a versatile utility tractor for various agricultural operations, offering both 2WD and optional MFWD 4WD configurations.
Engine and Performance
The tractor is powered by a 6-cylinder, 12-valve, liquid-cooled engine with a displacement of 401 cubic inches (6.6 liters). It operates at a rated speed of 2100 RPM and produces approximately 100 horsepower. The engine utilizes a 1-5-3-6-2-4 firing order and requires specific valve clearances, with 0.016 inches for intake and 0.019 inches for exhaust when cold.
Transmission Systems
The 7840 features several transmission variants depending on the model specification. Options include the 8-speed constant mesh EconoShift, the 16-speed Dual Power system, the 12-speed synchronized SynchroShift, and the 16-speed ElectroShift/Pulse Command. These systems utilize either dry or wet disc clutches to manage power delivery, with the ElectroShift providing push-button power shifting across two synchronized ratio groups.
Hydraulics and Hitch
The hydraulic system is available in open-center (S/SL) or closed-center load-sensing (SLE) configurations, providing a pump flow of up to 20 gpm (75.7 lpm) on the SLE model. The rear hitch is a Category II type featuring position control and top-link draft sensing. Electronic lower-link sensing is available as an option on the 7840 SLE, with rear lift capacities ranging from 6,210 lbs to 8,710 lbs depending on the specific model and configuration.
Dimensions and Operator Environment
The tractor is built on a wheelbase of 106 inches for the 2WD model and 103 inches for the 4WD version. Operators can choose between a two-post foldable ROPS with a flat-deck platform or the Comfort Command Cab, which includes air conditioning on SL/SLE models. Steering is power-assisted, and braking is handled by mechanical wet disc brakes on SL/SLE models.
Conclusion
The Ford 7840 is a robust and highly configurable row-crop tractor suitable for a wide range of field tasks. Its diverse transmission options and hydraulic capabilities allow it to be tailored to specific operational needs, making it a dependable machine for professional agricultural use.
