Introduction
International Harvester 706 Standard-Tread Tractor
The International Harvester 706 is a standard-tread agricultural tractor produced between 1963 and 1967. Designed for mid-to-high horsepower field operations, it represents a significant era in mid-century tractor engineering, offering multiple fuel configurations and advanced transmission options.
Engine and Performance
The tractor is powered by the International Harvester C291, a 291-cubic-inch (4.8 L) liquid-cooled, 6-cylinder engine. Rated at 2300 RPM, this powerplant was available in gasoline and LP gas configurations. Maintenance specifications include a sparkplug gap of 0.023 inches for the gasoline model and specific valve clearances of 0.027 inches for both intake and exhaust valves when hot.
Transmission and Drivetrain
The 706 offers two primary transmission layouts. The standard sliding gear transmission provides 8 forward and 4 reverse gears. Alternatively, the model is available with a Torque Amplifier (TA) system, which functions as a hydraulically-actuated under-drive that can be shifted on the move without using the clutch, resulting in 16 forward and 8 reverse speeds. The tractor features a 12-inch dry disc clutch and is available in 4x2 2WD or optional 4x4 MFWD configurations.
Hydraulics and Hitch
The open-center hydraulic system features a standard pump flow of 12 gallons per minute (gpm), with an optional 17 gpm pump available, totaling up to 24 gpm of flow capacity. The rear hitch system supports both Category I and II implements and was available with the proprietary IH Fast Hitch or a standard 3-point configuration, controlled by an optional torsion bar system.
Operational Dimensions and Features
Built on a wheelbase of 87.5 inches for the 2WD model, the 706 provides a stable platform for field work. It features power steering and hydraulic disc brakes as standard equipment. From 1966 onwards, factory-installed air conditioning became an option for the cab. The rear power take-off (PTO) is independent and offers both 540 and 1000 RPM speeds.
Conclusion
The International Harvester 706 is a versatile and durable machine suited for general agricultural tasks. Its combination of a high-torque engine, flexible transmission options, and adaptable hitch systems made it a staple of mid-1960s farming operations.
Production Information of International Harvester, 706
- The 706 was available with a new Torque Amplifier design that prevented free-wheeling when going downhill. An over-center hand clutch was an option, usually found on Wheatland (standard tread) models. The 706 was available with either the Fast Hitch or a standard 3-point hitch. The PTO featured both 540 and 1000 RPM shafts, both of which turned while in use.

Transmission Information of International Harvester, 706
Transmission variants 1
- The 706 transmission is controlled by means of two levers. A range lever selects high, low, reverse range, or neutral. A separate speed lever selects one of four speeds. The tractor must be stopped, and the clutch used, to change range or speed gears.

Transmission variants 2
- The Torque Amplifier (TA) provides a hydraulically-actuted under-drive that may be shifted, on the move, with any range and speed selection in the main transmission. Using the TA does not require the clutch or stopping the tractor. With the lever in the forward position, the TA is disengaged and the transmission is in direct drive. To slow the tractor (increasing pulling power) the TA lever should be pulled smoothly and quickly to the rear, engaging the TA. To disengage the TA and return to direct-drive, the TA should be moved forward, with a slight pause at the center position of the lever.
