Introduction

New Holland 7740 Row-Crop Tractor

The New Holland 7740 is a row-crop tractor produced in Basildon, England, between 1996 and 1997. As part of a series spanning from the 6640 to the 7840, this model was engineered to provide versatile performance for various agricultural operations, balancing power with mechanical reliability.

Engine and Performance

The tractor is powered by a 5.0-liter, 4-cylinder, 8-valve liquid-cooled engine. It produces a net power output of 95 hp (70.8 kW) and a gross power of 100.3 hp (74.8 kW). The engine reaches its peak torque of 413 lb-ft (560.0 Nm) at 1200 RPM, providing consistent lugging ability for field work. The fuel system utilizes a Lucas CAV DP200 pump, and the engine is maintained through a dual paper element air cleaner.

Transmission and Drivetrain

The 7740 offers multiple transmission configurations to suit operational requirements. Options include the 8-speed constant mesh, the 16-speed Dual Power, the 12-speed SynchroShift, and the 16-speed ElectroShift/Pulse Command. The ElectroShift version features a four-speed power shift with push-button control. Drivetrain options include a standard 4x2 2WD or an optional 4x4 MFWD configuration, both utilizing inboard planetary final drives.

Hydraulics and Hitch

Hydraulic capabilities vary by model variant, featuring either an open-center system (S/SL) or a closed-center load-sensing system (SLE). The SLE variant provides a pump flow of up to 20 gpm (75.7 lpm). The rear hitch is a Category II type, featuring position control and top-link draft sensing as standard, with electronic lower-link sensing available as an option on the SLE model. The rear lift capacity at 24 inches (610 mm) is rated at 6,210 lbs (2816 kg), with higher capacity options available.

Operator Environment and Dimensions

The tractor is available with a two-post foldable ROPS or an optional Comfort Command Cab equipped with air-conditioning on SL/SLE models. Steering is power-assisted, operating at a pressure of 2100 psi. The wheelbase measures 93 inches (236 cm), with a width of 77 inches (195 cm) for 2WD models. Front axle clearance is 22 inches for the 2WD version and 20 inches for the 4WD version.

Conclusion

The New Holland 7740 is a highly configurable tractor designed for row-crop applications. With its range of transmission choices, from simple mechanical gearboxes to power-shift systems, and its substantial lift capacity, it remains a capable machine for farmers requiring a mid-range tractor with proven mechanical architecture.
