Introduction
New Holland 7840 Series Tractor
The New Holland 7840 is a row-crop tractor manufactured in Basildon, England, between 1996 and 1998. Positioned as a versatile workhorse, it was designed to meet the requirements of diverse agricultural operations, offering a balance of power and mechanical flexibility.
Engine and Performance
The tractor is powered by a 6-cylinder, 12-valve, liquid-cooled engine with a displacement of 401 cubic inches (6.6 liters). It operates at a rated speed of 2100 RPM, with a compression ratio of 17.5:1. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, and the engine is maintained by a 12-volt electrical system featuring an alternator for charging.
Transmission and Drivetrain
The 7840 offers multiple transmission configurations to suit varying operational needs. Options include the 8-speed constant mesh EconoShift, the 16-speed Dual Power, the 12-speed synchronized SynchroShift, and the 16-speed ElectroShift/Pulse Command. These transmissions provide a range of speeds and shuttle capabilities, with some models utilizing wet disc clutches for enhanced durability during frequent shifting.
Hydraulics and Hitch
The hydraulic system features a pump flow of 17.4 GPM (65.9 lpm), with the SLE model offering an increased capacity of 20 GPM. It is equipped with Category II rear hitches, providing significant lift capacities ranging from 6,210 lbs to 8,710 lbs depending on the configuration. The hitch system supports position control and top-link draft sensing, with optional electronic lower-link sensing available on specific models.
Mechanical and Dimensions
The tractor is available in 4x2 2WD or optional 4x4 MFWD configurations. It utilizes a power steering system for improved handling and inboard planetary final drives. Operators can choose between a two-post foldable ROPS with a flat-deck platform or the Comfort Command Cab, which includes air-conditioning for extended work periods.
Conclusion
The New Holland 7840 is characterized by its modular transmission options and robust hydraulic capacity, making it a suitable choice for farmers seeking a reliable, mid-range row-crop machine capable of handling varied implements and field conditions.
