Introduction
Farmall 706 Row-Crop Tractor
The Farmall 706 is a row-crop tractor manufactured by International Harvester in Rock Island, Illinois, between 1963 and 1967. Designed as a versatile workhorse, it was offered with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations to meet various agricultural requirements.
Engine Specifications
The tractor is equipped with the International Harvester C291 liquid-cooled, 6-cylinder gasoline engine, displacing 291 cubic inches (4.8 liters). It operates at a rated speed of 2300 RPM with a compression ratio of 7.5:1. The engine was also available in an LP gas configuration.
Transmission and Drivetrain
Two transmission options were provided. The standard 8-speed sliding gear transmission uses a two-lever control system. Alternatively, the Torque Amplifier (TA) transmission offers 16 forward and 8 reverse speeds. The TA is a hydraulically-actuated under-drive system allowing for on-the-move shifting to increase pulling power without the need to engage the main clutch.
Hydraulics and PTO
The hydraulic system is an open-center type with a standard pump flow of 12 GPM (45.4 lpm), which could be increased to 17 GPM (64.3 lpm) as an option. The independent rear PTO provides dual speeds of 540 and 1000 RPM, both selectable at the rated engine speed of 2100 RPM.
Operator Environment and Mechanics
Standard mechanical features include power steering and hydraulic dry double-disc brakes. A cab was offered as an optional feature, with air conditioning availability beginning in 1966. The tractor utilizes either a standard 3-point hitch or the proprietary IH Fast Hitch system.
Conclusion
With a power output of 89 hp and multiple configuration options, the Farmall 706 was designed for general row-crop applications. Its combination of a high-torque engine and the flexible Torque Amplifier transmission made it a durable and adaptable choice for mid-to-large scale farming operations during the 1960s.

Transmission Information of Farmall, 706
Transmission variants 1
- The 706 transmission is controlled by means of two levers. A range lever selects high, low, reverse range, or neutral. A separate speed lever selects one of four speeds. The tractor must be stopped, and the clutch used, to change range or speed gears.

Transmission variants 2
- The Torque Amplifier (TA) provides a hydraulically-actuted under-drive that may be shifted, on the move, with any range and speed selection in the main transmission. Using the TA does not require the clutch or stopping the tractor. With the lever in the forward position, the TA is disengaged and the transmission is in direct drive. To slow the tractor (increasing pulling power) the TA lever should be pulled smoothly and quickly to the rear, engaging the TA. To disengage the TA and return to direct-drive, the TA should be moved forward, with a slight pause at the center position of the lever.
