Introduction

J.I. Case VA: Standard-Tread Tractor

The J.I. Case VA is a standard-tread tractor produced between 1942 and 1955 in Rock Island, Illinois. As the successor to the V series, the VA model represents a significant era in the development of Case agricultural machinery, notably introducing the company's Eagle Hitch system in 1949.

Engine and Performance

The tractor is powered by a 124 cubic inch (2.0 L) liquid-cooled, 4-cylinder gasoline engine. It operates at a rated speed of 1425 RPM, producing approximately 18 horsepower. The engine features a 6:1 compression ratio and uses an oil bath air cleaner to ensure longevity in dusty field conditions.

Transmission and Drivetrain

Power is transferred through an unsynchronized gear transmission offering four forward speeds and one reverse gear. The drivetrain includes a 228.6 mm dry disc clutch. The vehicle utilizes a two-wheel drive configuration and is steered via a manual steering system.

Hydraulics and PTO

The tractor is equipped with a rear power take-off (PTO) of the transmission type, providing 540 RPM at an engine speed of 1425 RPM. It features the Case Eagle Hitch, a specialized implement attachment system designed to improve operational efficiency with mounted equipment.

Dimensions and Chassis

With a wheelbase of 75.25 inches (191 cm) and a total length of 116.25 inches (295 cm), the VA maintains a compact footprint. It weighs approximately 3200 lbs (1451 kg) and offers a ground clearance of 15.6 inches (39 cm). The tread width is adjustable, ranging from 48 to 72 inches at the rear.

Conclusion

The J.I. Case VA is a versatile, light-duty tractor suited for general farm tasks. Its mechanical simplicity, combined with the later introduction of the Eagle Hitch, made it a practical choice for row-crop and standard agricultural applications during its production run.
